Pro-Kennedy
"A Difference of Vision" by Rob Smith Jr.
- This cartoon was made in 2010 by Rob Smith Jr. The message of this cartoon is that John F. Kennedy had greater and more ambitious visions than Obama does according to Smith. The cartoonist compares the purposeful vision that JFK had of going to the moon, to that of Obama's vision of simply building trains. This message is meaningful to our current time period because it is important to compare past presidents with the former president to see if we have made any progress as a nation and in our visions.
- Kennedy's smile and facial features makes him appear as a charismatic man compared to Obama's features which make him look somewhat silly.
- There are not any significant symbols used in this cartoon however the cartoonist does allude to JFK's plan to go to the moon and Obama's policies to build trains. Furthermore, JFK's picture is in black and white to represent the difference in time period between the two presidents.
- This cartoon appeals to the Republicans who believe that Obama has not made any significant progress for the country. It also appeals to those who were fans of JFK and believe he was a great president.
Anti-Kennedy
"Kennedy" by an unknown Cuban artist
- This is a cartoon made by a Cuban cartoonist. The message that he is conveying is that J.F.K. is no different than the rest of the former U.S. president. The subtitles under the cartoon say "same collar, different dog". The cartoonist portrays Kennedy as a dog and the collar signifies that he is in favor of fascism and capitalism. Kennedy was not liked in Cuba because of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the "Bay of Pigs" invasion.
- Kennedy's hair and teeth are caricatured in this cartoon. They exaggerate the size of Kennedy's teeth to make him look like a dog. They also portray his eyes in a twirl to signify that he is hypnotized by fascism and capitalism. Also his famous hair style is emphasized in this cartoon.
- The swastika and the currency symbol are depicted in this cartoon. The swastika clearly representing fascism and the currency symbol representing capitalism
- This cartoon more than likely appealed to the Cubans more than anybody else since it was published by a Cuban. Also the subtitle is in Spanish therefore it was probably created for a Cuban audience.
